Hurricane Maria causes 'mind boggling' damage to Caribbean island

The hurricane is headed for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

A third hurricane is sweeping through the already battered Caribbean, and the storm has caused "widespread devastation" to one island.

Hurricane Maria is moving away from the island of Dominica after its 160 mph winds ripped off roofs, including that of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, he wrote on Facebook. He called the damage to the island "mind boggling."

As of early Tuesday no deaths had been reported, but Skerrit said his "greatest fear" is that people would be seriously injured or killed from the landslides that are likely due to all the rain.

Where's Maria headed?

Maria's track has the storm moving west-northwest, with the eye of the "extremely dangerous" hurricane expected to approach the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico Tuesday night and Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said in its 5 a.m. update on Tuesday

Maria is expected to remain a "potentially catastrophic" Category 5 hurricane with 160 mph winds as it approaches the northeastern Caribbean Sea, the National Hurricane Center says

The agency notes Maria will remain a Category 4 or 5 hurricane through at least Wednesday, with hurricane-force winds extending outward up to 30 miles from the eye of the storm and tropical-storm-force winds extending up to 125 miles from the core.
