Police have made an arrest in an 11-year cold case in St. Paul.
Heidi Firkus, 25, was killed on April 25, 2010. Her husband, Nicholas James Firkus, now 38, was arrested Wednesday morning in connection to her death, the St. Paul Police Department said in a statement to Bring Me The News.
Nicholas Firkus was taken into custody on a sealed arrest warrant by the St. Paul PD's SWAT team at his home on the 5000 block of Red Oak Drive in Mounds View, police said. He's been book into the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of murder.
He has not been formally charged as of Wednesday afternoon. Any additional updates on the case will be released by the Ramsey County Attorney's Office "at a later time," police said.
In a statement after Firkus' arrest, Heidi's family said:
"We're extremely grateful for all those who have worked so hard and long to get the case to this point. And also for everyone who has prayed and stood beside us all these years.
"We are hopeful that these charges will finally bring out the truth and result in justice for Heidi. Even though we know we can't have her back, we believe Heidi would want us to have the truth. God is honored by truth. Heidi's life and memory is further honored by truth."
Heidi was fatally shot in her home at 1794 Minnehaha Ave. W. around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 25, 2010, the public police report says.
Nicholas Firkus told police someone broke into their home and he grabbed his shotgun, telling officers he and the intruder struggled and the gun went off, hitting Heidi in the back, the Pioneer Press reports.
In Heidi's obituary, she was described as a "joyful child of God" and someone who "committed her life" to Jesus.
The Pioneer Press says Heidi and Firkus met at church and were set to be evicted from their home due to foreclosure the day after she was killed.
Wednesday's arrest is the first time someone has been arrested in connection to Heidi's death. The paper notes a year after Heidi's death police said Firkus hadn't yet been ruled out as a possible suspect.
No other details about what led police to arrest Firkus on Wednesday have been released.
