Hutchinson Technology Inc. (HTI) is eliminating 78 jobs at its Eau Claire, Wisconsin, factory.

The Leader-Telegram reports the company said in a filing with the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development that the cuts will begin around May 3 and are expected to be completed around the end of June.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the action comes as the struggling disk-drive component maker continues to cut its expenses.

The Hutchinson-based company has said in regulatory filings that it's reshaping itself with the intent of being the lowest-cost maker of suspension assemblies for disk drives.

The Journal Sentinel says HTI has lost tens of millions of dollars annually for six years running. The losses range from $35 million last year to $168 million in 2009.

The factory is one of the largest employers in the Eau Claire area, according to WEAU. In its latest annual report HTI said it had 660 employees and 81 temporary workers in Eau Claire as of Jan. 29. The company reported that it had 2,436 employees in the U.S. and Thailand as of last September.

WEAU reports the Department of Workforce Development says it will work with the West Central Workforce Development Board to help affected workers.
