Interstate 35W is closing once again in Minneapolis this weekend, but it's the last time this year.

That statement should make you feel better, until you realize there are only around 7 weeks left of 2018, and more weekend closures are planned for 2019.

The stretch of busy interstate between Hwy. 62 and I-94 has closed on several weekends already in recent months, as part of the Minnesota Department of Transportations $240 million upgrade of I-35W that will continue until 2021.

This weekend's closure will start at 10 p.m. Friday, with the reopening at 5 a.m. Monday.

It will allow for underground utility work to take place, with drivers detoured via I-94 to I-394 to Hwy. 100 to Hwy. 62.

This weekend's shutdown comes with the Timberwolves playing at Target Center on both Friday night and Sunday afternoon, while the Gopher hockey and football teams play on Saturday.

Also this weekend, I-35 in Forest Lake will be down to one lane while the Hwy. 97 bridge over I-35 is demolished.

On the plus side, while traffic will be a bit of a pain this weekend, MnDOT has confirmed that ramp access from northbound I-35W to 5th Avenue in downtown Minneapolis will re-open on Monday.
