UPDATE 8:45 P.M.
Police say a man has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and fell from a bridge onto I-494 Thursday evening.
Bloomington Police Department said the man had earlier been shooting at vehicles from the pedestrian bridge across the interstate near the Portland Avenue interchange.
The department said one of its officers fired at the man as he turned the gun on traffic, but it's not clear if he was hit.
The man then climbed on the fencing over the bridge, and began firing again from the fence. He then shot himself and fell from the bridge, causing I-494 to be closed both directions.
Anyone dealing with a suicidal crisis or emotional distress can always contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by calling 1-800-273-8255. The lifeline is available 24/7/365.
Interstate 494 is currently closed in both directions in Richfield due to a "traffic incident."
The Minnesota Department of Transportation 511 site says the freeway is closed between Hwy. 77 and I-35.
At this stage it's not clear what has happened, though the Minnesota State Patrol has confirmed it's assisting local law enforcement by closing ramps, per KARE 11.
Bloomington Police Department meanwhile has said it is investigating a death, with more expected to be announced at a media briefing in the parking lot of the Menards at 494 and Nicollet, adjacent to where the interstate is closed.
