IBM is cutting jobs at facilities across North America, including Rochester.

As usual the company was not providing any specifics about employment Wednesday. But one longtime Rochester employee told the Post-Bulletin he learned 10 minutes after arriving for work that his job was eliminated. The worker, who asked that his name not be published, added that "A fair number of people in the area I work in are affected."

Word of layoffs was trickling in from IBM facilities across the country through the day. An unidentified source told Newsday the company was implementing a plan announced in April to spend $1 billion reducing its workforce. An analyst tells Newsday that would translate into 6,000 to 8,000 jobs, which is less than two percent of IBM's total workforce.

Gannett reports Rochester is one of four U.S. facilities IBM targeted for cuts, with the others being in Vermont, North Carolina, and Poughkeepsie, New York. Gannett also says IBM notified the governor of Vermont that a reorganization involving layoffs underway.

IBM remains the world's largest provider of computer services and has more than 400,000 employees. But its commitment to Rochester may be waning, particularly since this spring's announcement that much of the manufacturing work being done there will be shifted to Guadalajara.
