Ice-covered roads reported around the state, 'no travel' advised in northern Minn.

Rain turned to sleet and snow prompted state officials to issue a no-travel advisory in northern Minnesota, the Star Tribune reports.

Icy roads have made travel nearly impossible in Hubbard, Cass, Itasca and Beltrami counties. The Beltrami County Sheriff's Office says hundreds of vehicles have gone into the ditch including several semis, WCCO noted.

The Duluth News Tribune says weather spotters have reported a glaze of ice caused by freezing rain on untreated surfaces in Grand Rapids and Brainerd. Highway 2 between the two cities was included in the no-travel advisory.

In Cass County, a quarter-inch of ice accumulation has been reported.

West of the metro, the Minnesota State Patrol says several vehicles have also gone off the road because of black ice.

Wet, icy roads are reported in much of western Minnesota, according to the West Central Tribune. One trooper reported only being able to drive 10 mph on a posted 55 mph highway.

The metro area is seeing the milder side of the storm. KARE 11 says temperatures in the lower 30s will create 1-2 inches of slushy accumulation by Sunday morning. No travel advisories have been issued in the Twin Cities.
