Iconic Peter's Grill closing after 99 years in downtown MPLS

The rumors, it turns out, were sadly true. Peter's Grill, a fixture in downtown Minneapolis for 99 years, will serve its last round of home cooking Saturday.

The rumor was first reported by the Heavy Table a week back, when a phone conversation with owner Peter Atsidakos confirmed it: “We’re going to close at the end of the month, it looks like,” he said.

The Star Tribune reports the doors will close after Saturday's lunch. “It’s not going to be easy for me to see that door closing,” Atsidakos tells the Strib. “My whole family has been serving the Twin Cities for 99 years.”

“This is Minneapolis, Peter’s Grill. It’s part of Minneapolis," one observer tells the Pioneer Press.

What did it in? Those fashionable food trucks all lined up in downtown Minneapolis, Astikados tells the Strib, which gives a nice history of the place (actually two places over the years).

“It’s the worst thing that could have happened to me,” he tells the paper. “There are trucks up and down on Marquette, a whole line of them right on our block. I don’t know why they all have to be right there, on Marquette. Why not spread them out, on Nicollet, or Hennepin?”

On another end-of-an-era note, the St. Paul paper also reports that Halek's Bar in north Minneapolis is closing Sunday after more than 65 years.
