Icy roads led to multiple crashes, spinouts in southern Minnesota

Freezing rain caused ice to accumulate on untreated roads Sunday morning, which led to a number of crashes in southern Minnesota.

A freezing rain advisory is in effect until late Sunday morning for parts of southwestern Minnesota.

Many roads in southwestern and southeastern Minnesota were listed as partially or completely covered in ice, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation's website, and travel was not advised on Highway 19 between the South Dakota state line into Marshall, Minnesota, because of ice.

Numerous accidents were reported Sunday morning, including at least one that caused injuries. A driver traveling westbound on Interstate 90 in Winona County lost control on the icy road, and rolled on its hood in the median ditch.

The driver suffered non-life threatening injuries, while the passenger wasn't injured, the State Patrol's website notes.

The "weak upper level disturbance" that moved through the state Sunday produced a few hundredths of an inch of freezing rain in the area, the National Weather Service says.

There were also reports of slippery road conditions in northern Minnesota, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

A high pressure system is expected to move through Minnesota Monday, ushering in another system that could bring a mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow to south-central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. It could produce a few inches of snow and up to a tenth of an inch of ice, the weather service says.

Temperatures are expected to get much colder midweek. Upper-20s to 30s are expected through Wednesday, but then the temperature drops – the high for Thursday is 13 degrees for the Twin Cities.
