Two St. Paul Police officers are on administrative leave following the shooting of a 30-year-old man on Thursday night.

That's according to the

">department's Twitter account, which identifies the victim as Phillip Quinn – a reportedly unstable man whose family says officers "were supposed to help" when they arrived at his residence, the Star Tribune reports.

Police said Thursday night that the officers had been called to the home on a report of a "suicidal adult male," though they have not yet specified what led up to his shooting death. Their investigation is still underway.

According to the Pioneer Press, family members had called for help after an erratic Quinn – whom they identify as a schizophrenic – threatened to stab his girlfriend.

After police showed up, Quinn apparently lunged at them and, "of course, they shot him," his girlfriend's mother told the paper.

But the victim's brother remarked to the Star Tribune that the police "did not have to use lethal ammunition,” as Quinn was a danger only to himself.

A Tweet from St. Paul Police indicates the officers are both veterans of the force with well over a decade of experience between them. Putting officers on paid administrative leave after fatal shootings is standard procedure for the department.
