The COVID-19 vaccine is free, regardless of insurance, and has been shown to be effective. Clinics and pharmacies around the state have been offering appointments and walk-ins for those interested. State leaders have teamed with private businesses to offer a bevy of incentives the newly vaccinated can claim.

Yet 77 days after opening the door for everyone age 16 and up to get vaccinated against COVID, the majority of Minnesota's counties have yet to hit the 60% vaccination rate.

In fact, a dozen remain below 50%, with one lone county still shy of 40%.

While Minnesota's current COVID-19 numbers are now lower than they have been since the very early weeks of the pandemic, there remains concern about the virus' spread in areas with low levels of vaccination amid the spread of the more transmissible Delta Variant, which first developed in India, and which has been found to adept at evading vaccine responses particularly among those who have only had 1 shot.

According to the most recent data available Monday, June 14, in 57 of the state's 87 counties, fewer than six in 10 adults have received at least a first COVID vaccine shot. They are, in descending order:

Despite the majority of counties lagging behind Gov. Tim Walz's stated goal of a 70% adult vaccination rate, more Minnesotans have received a vaccine than those who have not.

The statewide adult vaccination rate is at 65.8%. Almost 3 million people have received a first dose, while just over 2.7 million are considered fully vaccinated.

Walz has said he hopes Minnesota reaches a 70% adult vaccination rate by July 4, though has reiterated he'd like to see it even higher.

“We’ve had great success in our state so far with more than 2.5 million Minnesotans fully vaccinated," he said back on May 27, "and we want to build on that success and get the broad community protection needed for everyone to have the fun, safe summer they want."
