It's another proud day for the State of Hockey, as Minnesota native Casey Mittelstadt was named the USA Today Hockey Player of the Year on Tuesday.

Mittelstadt just wrapped up his senior year at Eden Prairie High School, where he helped the Eagles reach the semifinals at the state tournament. He'll be playing college hockey this fall at the University of Minnesota.

He won the state's Mr. Hockey award, compiling 72 points (23 goals, 49 assists) in 30 games this season for Eden Prairie. There's a good chance he could also be taken in the top 5 of the NHL Draft in June.

A lot of scouts and hockey experts were surprised he came back to Eden Prairie for his senior year. But after the Eagles lost at the state tournament in 2016, he said it was all about having one more year with his teammates.

He's currently No. 3 among NHL.com's draft prospects.
