Indictments for Twin Cities couple accused of faking husband's death

Nearly two years after a tipster told authorities of a scheme to fake a Minnesota man's death and collect millions in insurance money, he and his wife have been indicted in federal court.

Irina Vorotinov and her former husband, Igor Vorotinov are charged with mail fraud and other crimes, though investigators believe Igor is hiding out in the Ukraine under a different name, the Associated Press reports.

The Star Tribune notes prosecutors maintain that Igor was traveling in his native Moldova when a body was discovered with his passport. Irina went to Moldova, identified the body, and returned to the Twin Cities with an urn of ashes.

According to the indictment, the Vorotinovs' son was part of the scheme, as well. The Star Tribune says 25-year-old Alkon Vorotinov is charged with helping his parents cover up the crime, and intends to plead guilty next month.

The story that unfolds in the federal criminal complaint indicates the family may have come close to getting away with it.

According to the documents, authorities learned that Igor was in fact alive and well in Ukraine thanks to a "tip from an unknown source" in 2013. But by that time, officials say, Irina had already gotten Mutual of Omaha to cut her a check for more than $2 million.
