An inmate at MCF-Moose Lake has died after collapsing on Sunday morning, but it wasn't related to the coronavirus.

The Minnesota Department of Corrections has confirmed that a 48-year-old man collapsed while taking a shower at 9:45 a.m.

Moose Lake has, as of Friday, eight confirmed cases of COVID-19, of which seven are inmates, but the DOC says the inmate who died hadn't complained of COVID symptoms and had not been in contact with any of the inmates who have coronavirus.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that the man had complained of heartburn to fellow inmates before he entered the shower and collapsed," the DOC said.

The inmate died despite staff initiating CPR and using an automatic external defibrillator (AED).

The Moose Lake Police Department is conducting the investigation with assistance from the Department of Corrections-Office of Special Investigations.

The man's identity has not been revealed.
