Is that you, October? Cool, breezy day will usher in summer-like weather

It's the middle of August, but it feels like early October.

Only the Twin Cities had temperatures above 60 degrees as of 4 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service says, as this "very powerful low pressure" system that brought 1-2 inches of rain to the region moves from southwest Minnesota to the Arrowhead region by Wednesday evening.

The weather service says it is "very rare to see such a strong low-pressure system in the summer. In fact it may well rival the low-pressure record" for the Twin Cities.

That low-pressure system is what's causing the cloudy, gloomy, October-like weather throughout the state. Tuesday's copious amount of rain with temperatures in the mid-60s is typical for Oct. 2, Paul Douglas wrote on the Star Tribune's weather blog.

Isolated showers are expected to continue through Wednesday as the low-pressure system moves out of the state, reaching Lake Superior by the evening. But rain amounts are expected to be light – less than a quarter of an inch, the weather service notes.

Strong winds are also expected Wednesday, especially across western Minnesota where northwest winds could reach 20-30 mph.

More seasonable weather coming

But the cool and breezy day is expected to usher in more seasonable weather as a high-pressure system builds Wednesday night. We should get a sunny and warmer day Thursday, going through the weekend, as temperatures climb back into the 80s.

The chance of showers and thunderstorms returns Saturday, ahead of a strong cold front, the National Weather Service says. AccuWeather says those who are planning to attend the preseason game against the Oakland Raiders at TCF Bank Stadium Saturday should stay alert for severe storms.

And for those who love the summer weather, long-range forecasts are hinting at a surge in temperatures for Aug. 27 – the first day of the Minnesota State Fair, Douglas notes.
