It was 29 degrees in some parts of Minnesota this morning

It was a little chilly this morning.

While the Twin Cities bottomed out in the 40s and 50s, northern Minnesota saw temperatures dip below freezing Wednesday morning.

It got down to 29 degrees in Brimson and Embarrass, the National Weather Service in Duluth tweeted. Here's a look at other low temperatures around the state Wednesday morning:

The National Weather Service warned people could see frost Wednesday morning in northwestern and north-central Minnesota, prompting the season's first frost advisory. And at least one person reported seeing some frost on their car in the Grand Forks, North Dakota, area.

That's not uncommon for the area this time of year. The National Centers for Environmental Information says the median first freeze (first day with temperatures below 32 degrees) comes in mid to late September in northern Minnesota and much of the Dakotas.

The Twin Cities and southern Minnesota typically dip below 32 degrees in early October.

And that will probably hold true this year. Paul Huttner wrote on MPR News' Updraft blog that the longterm forecast shows milder air returning to the region, so the metro will probably stay "frost-free" through the end of the September.

80s next week?

The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center shows Minnesota has a good chance of seeing above-average temperatures next week, with Huttner saying the Twin Cities could see 80 degrees on Monday.

The warm-up comes after some rain Thursday into Friday. The National Weather Service says thunderstorms are likely across much of the state thanks to a low pressure system that's moving through.

Cooler and drier weather is expected for the weekend, before temperatures climb back into the 70s Sunday, the weather service notes.
