Jim Northrup, a famed Ojibwe author, poet and Vietnam War veteran, has died after complications with cancer, according to reports.

His son confirmed the 73-year-old's death on Facebook Monday night. Northrup had kidney cancer that spread to his lungs, lymph nodes and brain, the Duluth News Tribune says. Northrup attributed his cancer to exposure to Agent Orange during his time as a Marine in the Vietnam War, reports note.

Northrup, who tried to speak Ojibwe as often as he could, lived a traditional Anishinaabe lifestyle as a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior ChippewaMPR News reported earlier this month, noting Northrup was facing death with his usual humor.

The award-winning writer documented life on the Fond du Lac reservation in his humorous syndicated newspaper column "Fond du Lac Follies," KBJR 6 notes, and also wrote several books, including: “Walking the Rez Road,” “Rez Road Follies,” “Anishinaabe Syndicated: A View from the Rez," among others.

The Star Tribune says his plays and books were widely produced, and helped non-American Indians understand his heritage.

Those who knew Northrup have been sharing their condolences on Twitter and Facebook.
