Justice restored: Statue gets her sword back

The Lady Justice statue atop the historic Blue Earth County Courthouse has her sword back, two months after she flung it to the ground, the Mankato Free Press reports.

Mankato residents in April were surprised to see the 11,000-pound copper statue had made a quarter turn. An inspection suggests wind gusts had caught on the statue's skirt, causing her to rotate on a steel-rod axis and drop the 6-foot sword from the towering perch, the county noted.

The statue had earlier been turned back into place, but she has been without her blade. Contractor Schwickert Co. Thursday morning used a crane to hoist two men and the sword up to the statue, the Free Press reports.

The statue standing atop her copper-sheathed dome was last removed and restored in 1990, the Free Press has reported. Lady Justice is a depiction of the Greek goddess of justice, Themis, with the scales of justice and a sword. But she is unusual in that she is without a blindfold and her eyes are wide open, the county notes.

Regular court business no longer takes place in the building, which dates to 1886. Judicial proceedings were moved in 2009 to the new Blue Earth County Justice Center a few miles away.
