Keith Ellison has denied accusations that he physically abused his ex-girlfriend, after a Facebook post alleging the abuse was posted by her son.

Austin Monahan went public with allegations against Ellison in which he alleges the 5th District congressman subjected his mother, Karen Monahan, to "pure hell" during their relationship.

He also alleges he has seen a 2-minute video showing Ellison physically and verbally abusing his mother, though a video was not shared along with his Saturday post and it has not been released in any form since the post was published.

The allegations come just three days before the Minnesota primaries will decide the Democratic nominee for Minnesota Attorney General, with Ellison up against several DFL competitors.

On Sunday, his campaign issued a strong denial of the claims in statements sent to local media, confirming he and Monahan were in a relationship till 2016 but that he was not abusive.

"I still care deeply for her well-being," he said. "This video does not exist because I never behaved in this way, and any characterization otherwise is false."

Monahan is an organizer for the Sierra Club and in her bio on Twitter she says helps those "who have been victimized by narcissist abuse."

She released the above tweet on Saturday evening, and followed it up on Sunday calling on people to stop bullying her son.

She also released two text messages she allegedly sent Ellison in December, and followed it up at 2:47 p.m. suggesting that because of his denial, she would be releasing more text messages and information.

Monahan has been a regular poster on Twitter in recent weeks, showing her support for the #MeToo movement and detailing her allegedly abusive relationship with a "narcissist" who until now had been unnamed.

Earlier this week, she wrote that she'd saved "over two years of dialog between us."

MPR has been through more than 100 texts and tweet messages between Monahan and Ellison in more detail, which shows them communicating post break-up.

The conversations were "at times friendly," Briana Bierschbach writes, but at other times could be more combative over the terms of the breakup and the emotional pain Monahan said she endured.

Monahan has shown her support for one of Ellison's rival DFL candidates, Debra Hilstrom, who shared a link to her son's Facebook post on Saturday, which in turn was retweeted more than 2,000 times on Twitter.

"The incidents described are troubling," she wrote. "I call on Keith Ellison to answer these allegations."

Fellow candidate Matt Pelikan, who has been endorsed in his run for AG by the Minnesota DFL, made a similar call, saying: "The allegations are extremely troubling. We all deserve a prompt, transparent, and thorough response from Keith and I ask him to respond without delay."

Ellison's ex-wife, Kim Ellison, also released a statement on Sunday, saying the allegations made against her former husband "does not match the character of the Keith I know."
