Keith Ellison's son is elected to Minneapolis City Council

He joins another new face representing north Minneapolis.

North Minneapolis is getting new representation on the Minneapolis City Council.

Jeremiah Ellison – the son of Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison – was declared the winner in Ward 5 after second and third choice votes were tabulated on Wednesday.

He beat out Council Member Blong Yang, who became the first Hmong-American to serve on the Minneapolis City Council when he was elected in 2013.

Ellison (who you may remember from the protests outside the Fourth Precinct after Jamar Clark was shot by police) ran on a platform that included creating a fair justice system, fighting environmental injustice, and making it affordable for people to own a home, among other things.

Ellison joins another new face representing north Minneapolis on the City Council. Phillipe Cunningham unseated longtime City Council President Barb Johnson in Ward 4
