A man has told police that an intruder broke into his home and fatally shot his wife while she slept, in a killing that has shocked the small town of Brewster, Minnesota.

The Star Tribune reports that authorities in the southwestern Minnesota town are investigating after a 40-year-old woman was shot to death shortly before 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

There were two other people, including the woman's husband, in the house on Second Avenue at the time, neither of whom were injured.

Although the woman's identity has not been officially confirmed, The Daily Globe received a death notice for that address in the name of Jan Pigman-Kruse.

According to the newspaper, the deceased's husband told police that someone had come into the home through a back door and shot his wife in the chest. He was woken up by a "bang" before finding her on the bed.

He said he could not identify the killer.

The shooting has shocked the small community, with neighbor Earl Slocum telling the Daily Globe: "We were so surprised. All I can say is they (the victim and family) are very nice people ... we say 'hi' to one another. It's sad ... she's so young."

KWOA reports that the victim's body has been taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy and identification.

The Nobles County Sheriff's Office told the radio station there does not appear to be any threat to public safety.
