Klobuchar and Franken to assist search for Minnesota's next U.S. attorney

Amy Klobuchar and Al Franken have formed a committee to find a replacement for Minnesota's current U.S. attorney, B. Todd Jones.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that Minnesota's two U.S. senators have created a confab to find the state's next top federal prosecutor. Jones is leaving his post as he readies for confirmation hearings next week to possibly lead the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Tobacco.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar said the committee includes a former U.S. Attorney, a police chief, and a county attorney, and will be chaired by a former head of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, according to MPR.

Jones has been pulling double duty, the Star Tribune reported last week, since he became acting director of the troubled federal agency about 18 months ago. The Strib also says that the June 4 hearings will "dramatically" increase the chance for Jones to get the post, which has been stalled for five months over objections raised by a group of powerful Republicans.

The sailing might not get smoother for Jones, however, as a statement from the U.S. House of Representatives makes clear regarding his role in Operation Fast and Furious, an ATF program involving firearms and Mexican drug cartels in Arizona.
