A Duluth man was shot and seriously wounded by police during a domestic disturbance call early Monday morning, after he refused to drop a knife he was holding, the Duluth News Tribune reports.

The 34-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, is hospitalized in critical but stable condition, police say.

According to police, officers were called to the home in the Piedmont Heights neighborhood about 4 a.m. on a report of a domestic disturbance. When they arrived, a woman told officers her husband had cut himself with a knife, and that he had popped the woman's air mattress, the  Northland News Center reports.

The husband then ran past them into the basement carrying an unknown object, and locked himself into a room.

When officers went downstairs they could see blood on the floor underneath the door. The man said he wanted to die and had a half-hour to live before bleeding to death, police said.

He refused to come out, even after police ordered him to do so several times. They forced the door open, and when the man refused orders to drop the knife he was holding, an officer shot him, according to the News Tribune.

Officers administered first aid and then transported the man to the hospital. The officer who fired his weapon has not been identified, but the department said he is a seven-year veteran of the force. He's been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is assisting with the investigation.
