Minneapolis mayor Rybak sets his sights on the governor’s office

As his third and final term as mayor of Minneapolis nears an end, R.T. Rybak hints at what's ahead, including a possible gubernatorial bid.

Rybak told BringMeTheNews CEO and founder Rick Kupchella at a Smile Network event Thursday that he's not ruling out another run for governor down the road.

"At some point, a number of years from now, if the governorship is open, I would be interested in that," Rybak said. "It's probably the only job I would be interested in right now."

In 2010, Rybak dropped out of the governor's race after losing the DFL endorsement to former House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher. Current DFL Gov. Mark Dayton won the election.

Rybak, who has worked on President Barack Obama's last two campaigns, and is one of five vice chairs of the Democratic National Committee, says he has no plans to head to Washington.

"I've never been divorced, but I've gotten advice that when you get divorced, you shouldn't jump into a new relationship right away. So, I'm going to be professionally promiscuous," Rybak said.

He says he'll stick around Minnesota where he serves on boards and committees for numerous organizations. Rybak intends to focus on things he's passionate about, especially education and closing the achievement gap – an issue he says he regrets not being more involved in.

In his 12 years as mayor, Rybak says the accomplishments he is most proud of are implementing the city’s STEP-UP Program, digging the city out of major debt and developing 311, the city’s information line.
