Snowy, slushy roads contributed to many traffic accidents across Minnesota Wednesday, including a crash that killed a 16-year-old student driving to Lakeville North High School.

WCCO reports Alyssa Ettl was only a quarter-mile away from the school when she lost control of her vehicle on Dodd Boulevard.

KARE-11 says Ettl's car spun sideways and was broadsided by an oncoming SUV.

A spokeswoman for the Lakeville school district tells the Pioneer Press Ettl, who was in her junior year, was involved in school activities and was a very good student whose death touches many lives at the school.

A statement from the school district says five churches in the area were planning to recognize Alyssa in evening ceremonies.

WCCO adds that school districts including Minneapolis canceled after-school activities because of the weather, with meteorologist Mike Augustyniak calling it the worst commute of the season so far.

Even before the evening rush started, the State Patrol said troopers across Minnesota had responded to 175 crashes Wednesday, 20 of which involved injuries.

The snow is part of the same storm that has dropped more than two feet on the Lake Superior shore. In the Twin Cities snowfall amounts are expected to range from 4 to 10 inches by the time it winds down overnight, with the largest totals in the northern suburbs. MPR's Paul Huttner said there were 6 inches on the ground going into rush hour.

Forecasters say the snow will be followed by bitter cold through the weekend.
