Latest donation figures show Minnesotans gave Hillary Clinton a big boost

Generous Minnesotans have been opening their wallets for presidential hopefuls – with Hillary Clinton raking in by far the most.

Analysis of Federal Electoral Commission reports provided by the Sunlight Foundation to the Star Tribune found that Minnesotans gave $786,121 to presidential candidates in the second quarter – with Democrat favorite Clinton taking in more than two-thirds of that.

Here's how the donations broke down, according to the newspaper:

  • Hilary Clinton: $559,713
  • Bernie Sanders: $49,404

  • Ben Carson: $49,411
  • Jeb Bush: $46,900
  • Ted Cruz: $21,441
  • Marco Rubio: Around $18,000
  • Rand Paul: Around $18,000.

Clinton of course made a stop in Minnesota last month, with a $2,700-a-ticket fundraiser held at the home of Ellen Goldberg Luger – the former head of the General Mills Foundation and the wife of U.S. Attorney Andy Luger – on June 22.

Donations of $2,700 are the maximum an individual can make before a presidential nominee is selected.

MPR studied the figures and said that while it is not certain how much the fundraiser raised on the night, it did find that at least $187,000 of Clinton's total Minnesota fundraising in the second quarter came the night before and the night after the event.

MPR says that among Clinton's most generous donors are Gov. Mark Dayton, his ex-wife and prominent DFL donor Alida Messinger, and Dayton’s Lt. Gov. Tina Smith.

Minnesota caucuses will be held on March 1, 2016 – so-called "Super Tuesday" when nine different states will pick its preferred presidential candidates.

The Tribune News Service, writing for the St. Cloud Times, said that volunteers are working on DFL campaigns for Clinton, Sanders and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley in the state currently.

On the Republican side, organizations for 10 candidates have been set up, including Bush, Arkansas Gov. Mick Huckabee, and Wisconsin's Gov. Scott Walker.
