Latest KSTP poll shows surge for gay marriage in Minn., but still strong opposition

Support for a change in Minnesota law that would allow for same-sex marriage has jumped 9 percent in just two months, KSTP-TV's Tom Hauser is reporting about a KSTP/SurveyUSA poll from Friday. Opposition toward changing the state law dropped 7 percent, with the two sides essentially swapping spots.

In the poll, 500 Minnesotans were asked this question:

Should the Minnesota state law that defines marriage as between one man and one woman be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry? Or should it be left as it is?

According to the results, 51 percent answered, "Should Be Changed," while 47 percent said, "Should Be Left As It Is." And just two percent weren't sure, while the poll claims a 4.5 percent margin for error.

Even if you factor the in margin and it comes up dead even at this point, the results are what KSTP calls a "dramatic shift" from a KSTP/SurveyUSA February poll that found 42 in favor of changing the law and 54 percent opposed.

The poll is revealing on other items as well, such as the legislature's work (28 percent approve), and lowering the state's sales tax while expanding its purview (57 percent opposed).
