Lawmakers propose $15M in safety improvements on deadly stretch of Hwy. 12

Lawmakers have introduced a bill to fund safety improvements on a troublesome stretch of Highway 12 in Hennepin County.

State Rep. Jerry Hertaus, R-Greenfield, introduced the bill (HF 2673/SF 2467) Tuesday that would put $15 million into repairs on the highway between Wayzata and Delano (see map at right).

The stretch of two-lane highway is one of the deadliest in the state, and has been the focus of safety efforts to prevent fatalities, including signs and rumble strips – but deaths still occur.

"What we have here is a rural sectioned highway, the last rural section of highway the metro region, that is actually getting metro volumes of traffic," Hertaus said, according to KSTP.

The proposed fixes to the highway include: Realignment at the intersections with Highway 92; realignment and safety improvements at the intersection with Highway 90; and safety median improvements from the interchange with Wayzata Boulevard in Wayzata to a half-mile east of Highway 6, the bill introduction says.

The money for the project would be appropriated from the Minnesota Department of Transportation's Trunk Highway Fund, the bill notes.

The House bill was referred to the Transportation Policy and Finance committee. The Senate bill was introduced Thursday and referred to the Finance committee, according to the Legislature's website.

KSTP says members of the Highway 12 Safety Coalition plan to meet with lawmakers on Thursday to go over a presentation before the bill moves forward.
