Legendary sports columnist Sid Hartman breaks hip in fall

The beloved Twin Cities sports columnist Sid Hartman is recovering in hospital after breaking his right hip in a fall.

The 96-year-old writer for the Star Tribune injured himself on Friday night, the Star Tribune reports, and underwent surgery on Saturday at Fairview Southdale Hospital.

His column won't appear in the newspaper or on the Star Tribune website till he's well enough the return, the newspaper adds.

Well wishes have been sent from those in the Minnesota sporting community, including from the Minnesota Vikings, who tweeted the following ahead of Sunday's home game against the Colts.

Dave Mona, Hartman's co-host on 830 WCCO show Sports Huddle, has more details on Hartman's condition, revealing he slipped on ice on his way to a birthday party Friday, which he still managed to attend, speak and sing at, before feeling unwell on his way home.

He's expected to be released from hospital in midweek and then will spend time convalescing at home. The radio station is accepting get well cards which it says it will forward to Hartman.

The Pioneer Press notes Hartman started his career as a paper boy in 1929 and after attending high school worked for the Minneapolis Tribune, before starting his first column in 1946 for the Minneapolis Times.
