LEGOs wanted: A MN library is asking for help starting a kids club

A library in Itasca County is asking for donations – in LEGO form.

The Grand Rapids Area Library put out a flier online titled, "Calling all LEGOs."

Tracy Kampa – who works in the library's children's department – told BringMeTheNews they're trying to start a LEGO club. She says it's part of a push to provide more opportunities for kids ages 6-12.

But they don't have any.

Kampa says building with the classic toys is a way to encourage children to get involved with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). They also provide time for kids to hang out and get creative with their friends.

And the library workers are not ditching the books for this special activity. Kampa says there will be themes for each club meeting. For example, kids may be encouraged to build animals or planets. Some themes may be more abstract, like weather.

Then the library will bring in books related to the theme for kids to look through when they're finished building.

Of course, that's going to take a lot of LEGOs.

Kampa's thinking they'll need about 12 to 16 pounds of the blocks. They're also looking for several base plates for kids to build their creations on.

So, if you have spare LEGOs sitting around the house that you'd like to donate, you can either drop them off at the library or mail them in.

If the library collects enough in time, Kampa says they'll kick off the club over the summer with six weekly sessions. Then once school starts, they'll continue club meetings once a month.
