Metro Transit says a Minneapolis pedestrian was fatally struck by a light rail train Sunday evening.

As KSTP reports, the accident occurred at 42nd St. and Hiawatha Ave. at about 6 p.m. The station says the train's driver will be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard procedure in such accidents.

There's no station at 42nd and Hiawatha. According to KARE-11, Metro Transit says the gate arms were down at the intersection and lights were flashing. The train reportedly stopped soon after striking the man, whose name was not immediately released. Rail passengers were transferred onto buses for a couple of hours during the on-scene portion of the investigation, KARE reports.

KSTP says investigators will also make use of the train's on-board computers and information stored in the ground-based communications system. The Star Tribune says the Police Department's rail safety division will also look at data regarding the gate arms and signals.

KARE says this is the 10th fatal accident on Minneapolis' light rail line since it opened in June of 2004.
