A train derailed between Mankato and the Twin Cities early Friday morning.

The Le Sueur County Sheriff's Office says the southbound Union Pacific train derailed 2 miles south of Le Sueur in Ottawa Township, near the Minnesota River, just before 5 a.m.

The locomotive and 12 cars came off the tracks, with some diesel fuel being spilled from the locomotive, sparking a fire on the ground.

The Le Sueur Fire Department had the fire under control and was allowing it to burn out.

There were no injuries reported, though the train crew was taken to a hospital as a precautionary measure.

It's not clear what caused the derailment at this stage.
