As many as 30,000 motorcyclists will hit the roads on Saturday for the annual Fall Flood Run, and the Department of Public Safety has reminded people to be extra cautious.

That's because 43 motorcyclists have died on Minnesota roads so far this year, the DPS said in a news release.

That number is down from 61 last year, but officials still encourage riders to "take safety into their own hands" while driving along the scenic river routes.

They say riders should wear a helmet and protective gear – and never drink and drive.

One-third of all motorcycle deaths involve impaired riders, DPS said.

Other motorists should pay attention, check blind spots and always look twice for motorcycles.

“Deadly crashes are preventable, and riders and drivers should work together and make smart, safe choices on the road,” Lt. Heath Dienger of the Minnesota State Patrol said in the release. “Travel at safe speeds, give each other space and never drink while riding or driving."

Police in southeast Minnesota and State Patrol troopers will be out patrolling during the event, the release said.

Fall Flood Run

This is the 51st annual Fall Flood Run.

According to the website, the charity run was born in 1965 when 12 riders rode 90 miles to Winona and threw sandbags to help out during the flood.

Today, riders purchase a $10 wristband to participate in the run and the funds go to Gillette Children's Hospital.

Directions and maps of the routes can be found here.
