Lots of people ate ice cream for breakfast to support kids with cancer

A small gesture to show support for kids with cancer has turned into a social media phenomenon, as people around the world decided to eat ice cream for breakfast Wednesday.

The Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day is a simple way to raise awareness of childhood cancer, started in 2013 by Annette Peterson of Forest Lake in honor of her daughter Malia, who died in 2010 at the age of 9 following a 14-month battle with kidney cancer.

What started out as a local event involving 50 people two years ago has now morphed into something quite a lot bigger.

The “Eat Ice Cream for Breakfast Day” Facebook page is filled with photos of people eating ice cream in honor of their own friends or relatives who have been dealing with childhood cancer, and telling stories about their loved ones. The page had nearly 6,000 likes by Wednesday afternoon.

"Whole classrooms, preschools, college classes are eating and talking about childhood cancer!! We LOVE to see it!" wrote Peterson.

Even a few celebrities are getting into the act, including actor Kevin Bacon.
