Lucky day for Delta workers, who are pocketing record bonus pay

Even superstitious Delta Air Lines employees will find this Friday the 13th to be a lucky day.

Delta Air Lines is distributing two months of profit-sharing bonuses. That includes $110 million that will go into the pockets of its Minnesota workforce, which totals almost 10,000 employees, according to a statement from the company.

"So it's going to be good for the state of Minnesota," Delta CEO Richard Anderson said Thursday in an interview with the Pioneer Press.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported the carrier will give its 80,000 employees a total of $1.1 billion in profit-sharing bonuses, making it a record payout. The company said that amounts to more than 16 percent of Delta employees’ pay. That's roughly double last year's bonuses.

Atlanta-based Delta paid out part of the total last October and will dole out the remainder on Friday.

Delta usually hands out the the profit-sharing payment on Valentine’s Day , but pushed it back since the heart holiday falls on Saturday this year. Celebratory parties are planned at the airline's headquarters near Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and other hubs.

Anderson, a former Northwest Air Lines CEO, told the Pioneer Press the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport is performing well for the airline, adding that its role in the Delta system is "incredibly important for us, with 10,000 employees, and a place where we continue to make investments."

Delta reported net income of $659 million for 2014, and said its pre-tax income for the year was $4.5 billion excluding special items.
