WCCO reports nearly 1,000 representatives of the Lutheran church will vote in an assembly Friday on whether to officially oppose a constitutional amendment to limit marriage to opposite-sex couples.

St. Paul-area Lutherans are expected to go on record this weekend against the proposed marriage amendment to the state Constitution that would define marriage as a union between a man and woman. Nearly 600 Lutherans, representing about 115 congregations in the St. Paul Area Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, are scheduled to vote Saturday in Burnsville.

Discussion of company performance was overshadowed at General Mills' annual meeting by shareholder questions about the marriage amendment. General Mills is publicly opposing the Constitutional amendment that would ban same sex marriage. CEO Ken Powell called it a business issue and said the amendment is not good for employees or the state.

About 100 people rallied in downtown Minneapolis over the weekend to protest a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage.

The majority of Lutheran representatives attending an annual assembly Saturday afternoon voted to install Ann Svennungsen as the new bishop of the ELCA's Minneapolis synod. The Star Tribune reports Svennungsen is currently an interim college pastor at St. Olaf College in Northfield. She will now lead the nation's largest Lutheran synod.

Minneapolis-based Capella University, an online learning center, announced Friday that it officially opposes the proposed constitutional amendment that would effectively ban gay marriage in Minnesota. Capella officials say theirs is the first major higher education institution to stand against the amendment.

Opponents of Minnesota's marriage amendment plan to bring in volunteers from other states to campaign against the measure. Three national gay rights groups are coordinating a recruiting effort to get volunteers to spend a week in any of four states that are voting on marriage. Minnesota's amendment would have the Constitution define marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

St. Paul-area Lutherans assembling in Burnsville, and separately, Gov. Mark Dayton and other activists holding "house parties" around the state, demonstrated their opposition to an amendment to the state Constitution that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
