'Make America rape again,' candidate in ND writes on Facebook

It started after he wrote that rape culture was a myth created by social justice warriors.

Nick Bata is running for the relatively unnoticed position of North Dakota Insurance Commissioner.

But a comment the Libertarian Party candidate made on Facebook this week has brought the race a lot of attention.

Bata, a 28-year-old North Dakota native, made the statement in question on this Facebook thread, during a conversation in the comments that stemmed from an article about understanding consent.

Bata wrote back on Sept. 30 that rape culture is a myth created by "SJW's" (social justice warriors), and things spiraled from there, with the comment section still being lit up through Oct. 11.

Which is when he posted, "Make America Rape Again."

People immediately began calling him out, and criticizing him for the remark.

SayAnythingBlog got in touch with Bata, and he said it was a sarcastic response to someone saying he must support Donald Trump (which he does not). He also said he will not apologize, since it's free speech, telling the site: “My rights don’t end where their insensitivity begins.”

Bata's opponent, Ruth Buffalo, picked up on it and on Wednesday put out a statement calling the comments "very troubling" and "completely unacceptable."

Rape culture, as the Marshall University Women's Center says, is an "environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture."

So that doesn't mean rape is legal, or that all men are likely to rape someone. It includes things like saying a woman who was raped "asked for it" by the way they dressed or acted; excusing the behavior of men who objectify or harass women by saying things like "boys will be boys"; and "teaching women to avoid getting raped instead of teaching men not to rape."

The North Dakota Insurance Department is in charge of keeping the insurance industry regulated, and protecting consumers. The current Commissioner is Adam Hamm. He is not running for re-election. Bata has a website called The Dakota Homestead if you want to read more about his positions.
