Mall of America reveals blizzard, boyband, Nickelodeon plans for Thanksgiving sales

Indoor blizzard? Check. British boyband? Check. Unlimited theme park rides? Check. Anything else? Oh yes, shopping ... lots and lots of shopping.

The Mall of America has revealed its plans to get Thanksgiving and Black Friday bargain hunters through its doors, the Pioneer Press reports, and hopes the bumper program of attractions for kids will persuade parents against shopping at its competitors.

A program of events was published on the mall's website that will include $10 entry to the Nickelodeon Universe Theme Park on Thanksgiving evening, with proceeds going to military charity Folds of Honor, and a performance by British band Rixton at 2 p.m. on Black Friday.

The popular promotion that gives people two unlimited-ride wristbands for the theme park when they spend more than $250 in the mall returns as well.

One of the new features this year is the Twizzard – an indoor blizzard that starts up when people tweet about it – and a pair of holiday-themed light shows appearing above the theme park, according to the Pioneer Press.

Most retailers at the mall, which kicked off its holiday festivities with the arrival of Santa on Tuesday, are expected to open their doors to shoppers from 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, though individual stores may choose to open at different hours.

Malls gear up for Black Friday

The United States largest shopping mall has a new competitor this year in the form of the Twin Cities Premium Outlet Mall in nearby Eagan, which opened earlier this year.

However, it was suggested in the Star Tribune that the Mall of America may actually benefit as the two malls combined could persuade more people to do their sales shopping in the south Metro area.

It comes as some of Minnesota's big retail names have revealed their plans for the busiest shopping period of the year.

This week Target announced an aggressive strategy for Black Friday sales, offering nine of its deals to shoppers early provided they can pick them up in store within four days.

Best Buy meanwhile is opting for a less-is-more approach, but also an earlier-is-better one, the Huffington Post reports.

Its stores will open at 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving, an hour earlier than last year, but shutting its doors at 1 a.m. and reopening at 8 a.m. on Black Friday, rather than opening throughout the night.
