A fatal crash in central Minnesota late Wednesday night involved a 91-year-old driver, according to the Stearns County Sheriff's Office.
A 911 caller informed dispatch at 11:32 p.m. that their daughter was driving home when she saw lights in a field approximately three miles north of Freeport. The caller went to scene and found an unresponsive man inside a crashed vehicle.
The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado was on its roof, with the driver, 91-year-old Donald E. Pflipsen, of Sauk Rapids, injured. Freeport Fire and Rescue extricated the man from the truck and transported him to Melrose Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The sheriff's office says the man was driving on County Road 11 near Woodview Road when he left the roadway at a sharp curve and hit a field approach, causing the truck to go airborne before landing on its roof.
The Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety has counted 74 deaths on state roads so far in 2021, which is up from 60 at the same point in 2020.
