A 54-year-old former felon who has previously attacked police officers has been arrested on suspicion of biting off the finger of a Minneapolis officer on Tuesday night, the Star Tribune reported.

Police would not confirm whether the finger had been successfully reattached, the newspaper reported. The 10-year law enforcement veteran's name was not released. He was in later reported to be in good condition at Hennepin County Medical Center.

The suspect "experiencing a mental health emergency" had been making a scene and breaking items at a residence in the 2400 block of 10th Avenue South, FOX 9 reports. He immediately attacked when a male and a female officer arrived, and a witness said the officer's finger was "bitten off," the Star Tribune reported.

The injured officer had "his hand around his hand and they had to grab him and hold him up," neighbor Isaiah Bloom said, describing other officers who came to the aid of their colleague, KSTP reported.

Several officers, using a Taser stun gun, were able to subdue the man, local media reported.
