A 23-year-old man is in custody on charges of arson and murder after a fire at a duplex left a woman dead.

The fire happened at 307 1/2 Arnold Ave. S. in Thief River Falls, northwestern Minnesota, just after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

The property was an up/down duplex, with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension saying the fire had broken out in the upper level, where the woman's body was found.

Her cause of death and identity will be released at a later stage after autopsy.

The man arrested for arson and 2nd-degree murder after the fire is the renter at the property, who was booked into the Pennington County Jail.

The Forum News Service reports that the suspect was under police surveillance, as he was suspected of selling meth and heroin from the apartment and had sold drugs to a police informant.

It also notes that the same property was raided last week and several people were arrested, though the suspected arsonist was not home at the time and was not among those taken into custody.

BMTN does not typically name suspects until they have been charged with a crime.
