The body of a 26-year-old Fargo man was recovered from a water-filled gravel pit Thursday night after his friends called authorities for help.

The Forum reports the man, whose name has not been released, was swimming illegally with five friends in the pit in Clay County, Minn. when he went underwater and didn't surface.

After an hour and a half of searching, divers located his body not far from where he was last seen.

The gravel pit is located on private mining lands known as the "Felton Pits," the Forum reported.

Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist told the Associated Press that the area is a well-known party spot despite "No trespassing" signs posted near the pit, which is believed to run 90 to 100 feet deep.

It is unclear if alcohol was involved, Bergquist said.
