A Wyoming, Minn. man accused of hitting and killing 24-year-old Trevor Langlois on the side of the interstate in Hinckley claims he didn't know he struck a person, according to the criminal complaint filed Friday.

The Star Tribune reports 31-year-old Derek A. Sanders is charged with criminal vehicular homicide in the death of Langlois on June 17.

Witnesses told investigators that Langlois, an Army veteran, was driving a car following a friend, who was test-driving a truck that he had just bought.

When the truck started having problems, Langlois and his friend pulled their vehicles over on an entrance ramp to southbound I-35 just before 11 p.m.

As Langlois approached the the driver's side of his friend's truck, he was struck by a Ford F-150 allegedly driven by Sanders, the complaint states.

Witnesses said the F-150 stopped briefly on the shoulder and continued driving.

Langlois died from his injuries Sunday night at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, WDIO reported.

After authorities released details on the damaged suspect vehicle they were looking for, a woman in Bloomington reported a pickup that fit the description last Monday.

Police eventually tracked down Sanders at his parent's home in Wyoming.

During questioning, he said he "was looking down or something" when he heard a crunch sound but kept going.

Sanders initially said he hit a tree but later said he ran into a truck, but denied knowing he hit a person, according to the newspaper.

Sanders also admitted to drinking that night, "a half a dozen or so" beers and mixed drinks at a bar in Pine City.

Sanders was arrested and booked into Pine County Jail. KARE 11 reports he's currently out on bail.

FOX 9 reported that Sanders has no criminal background, but has four driving-related citations on his record.
