A Forest Lake man is charged with assault in two counties after authorities say he used a hammer, a crossbow and a pickaxe to attack two people last week.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Justin Cardinal, 33, is accused in Washington County of assaulting a man with a crossbow and a pickaxe early Thursday morning. And he faces assault charges in Anoka County for attacking a woman with a hammer a short time later.

According to the criminal complaint, Cardinal was staying at the home of the man in Forest Lake, and Cardinal had asked him several times early Thursday to borrow his car. The man refused, and a short time later he encountered Cardinal holding a pickaxe and a small handheld crossbow.

When the man turned his back to Cardinal, he felt a sharp pain and realized that he had been shot in the back of the head with a dart from the crossbow, according to the complaint.

Cardinal is then accused of hitting the man in the face with the pickaxe. The man suffered a black eye, a swollen face and a laceration to his cheekbone, according to the Pioneer Press.

Cardinal then left the residence with two women in one of their vehicles, and was reportedly heading to the Running Aces Casino in Columbus when he became angry with one of them and accidentally drove off the road into a ditch, the Pioneer Press reports.

A homeowner nearby came over to help, then he saw the man in the car hit one of the passengers in the head repeatedly with a hammer, according to the Forest Lake Times.

The witness called 911 and the suspect fled. Police found Cardinal several hours later hiding in a wooded area nearby, and arrested him.

The woman suffered head injuries and a broken finger, and was treated at Regions Hospital, according to the Times.

Cardinal was charged with felony assault in Washington and Anoka counties. He is being held in the Anoka County Jail on $300,000 bail.

The Pioneer Press notes that Cardinal has a criminal history that includes assault, robbery, making terroristic threats and drug possession.
