A Minnesota man who pleaded guilty to killing his father and brother was sentenced to 61 years in prison Friday, KSTP reports.

Christopher T. Besser was accused of fatally shooting Todd Besser – a 49-year-old Elk River police officer – and Blake Besser – his 27-year-old sibling – at the brothers' St. Michael home on May 9, 2015.

According to the criminal complaint, Christopher Besser told investigators he "just snapped" before shooting them both – his father in the back of the head, his brother in the abdomen.

Blake Besser called 911 after the incident, and according to the charges died on the phone.

Christopher Besser called police shortly after to turn himself in.

Besser pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in December, North Wright County Today reported.

He'd been initially charged with two counts of intentional second-degree murder. A grand jury later indicted him on first-degree murder charges.

A single charge of second-degree murder caries a prison sentence of up to 40 years.
