A man has been charged with the murder of his wife following an argument at their home in Bloomington.

John Lawler, 56, was charged with 2nd-degree murder in the stabbing death of his 47-year-old wife at their home on the 10200 block of Quebec Avenue on Sunday evening.

The couple's adult son was home at the time the pair returned around 6 p.m.. with his mother telling him that Lawler had picked her up from work "and they weren't getting along."

She spent some time in the basement listening to music with her younger son, who went to sleep about 10 p.m.

She stayed listening to music till around 11 p.m., at which point the older son heard the music turn off and then "shouting between his mother and Lawler."

"The adult son went to the kitchen and found his mother covered in blood, lying on the floor with Lawler on top of her," the complaint states.

"The son called 911, but police and paramedics were unable to revive her and she was pronounced dead at 11:19 p.m.," the complaint states.

An autopsy of the mother's body found she had been stabbed four times on her left front, side and back, as well as defensive wounds to her hands.
