One man is dead and a woman was critically injured after a shooting in Minneapolis early Monday.

After hearing gunshots, officers with the Minneapolis Police Department responded to the 2800 block of South 15th Avenue to find the two people in a vehicle, a news release says. The man was dead, and the woman was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center.

The suspect was gone when the officers arrived.

The medical examiner will release the identity of the man, along with his cause of death.

In response to the incident, the Third Precinct says it will increase patrols in the area and is asking for officers to increase community engagement in the affected neighborhood.

New team to investigate shootings

This shooting comes a few days after Minneapolis officials announced a new unit to investigate shootings and other violent crimes.

The “Violent Crimes Investigation Team” will comprise six city investigators drawn from various departments, who will probe “every gun crime and shooting in the city,” city officials announced Friday.

Through October of this year, there have been 39 reported homicides in Minneapolis, according to the city's Uniform Crime Report. At this time last year, there were 29 reported homicides, the report shows. In all of 2014, there were 32 homicides, fewer than the 40 reported in 2013.
