One person died in a crash in the Twin Cities area during the Monday morning commute.

According to the State Patrol incident report, a Buick LaCrosse was traveling west on Highway 212 in Chanhassen, just past Powers Drive, around 7:30 a.m.

It got into a broadside crash with at least one other vehicle. The driver of the Buick, who has not been identified, died, the report says.

The State Patrol describes the road conditions as icy.

Eastbound 212 at Minnesota 41 is closed until about noon, MnDOT says, while the westbound side is down to one lane from MN 101 to MN 41 until about 10:30 a.m. The Star Tribune says drivers stuck due to the closure were being allowed to U-turn onto the westbound lane, which is what led to the limited space on that side.

More crashes during morning commute

Out in west-central Minnesota, frosty roads led to crashes in Wilkin, Ottertail, Wadena, Grant and Douglas counties during the Monday commute,

" target="_blank">State Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow tweeted.

And according to the State Patrol, one person was killed when a Volkswagen crossed the center line on Highway 4 in Meeker County just north of Cosmos, and struck a Ford pickup truck head-on around 5:20 a.m. Monday.

The driver of the Volkswagen died, but has not been identified. The two occupants of the Ford suffered non-life threatening injuries, the patrol's report says.

There have also been some accidents in Duluth following light snowfall, police tweeted.

The Minnesota State Patrol says in its incident report Elmer Monson, of Hillman, was heading east in a Jeep Liberty on Highway 27 in Morrison County around 8 p.m.

When he neared 350th Avenue (east of Lastrup), the vehicle "encountered icy conditions" and went off the road on the south side of the highway, according to the report.

Monson was not belted in, and when the vehicle rolled he was thrown from it. The patrol's incident report says alcohol was not detected.

Monson died on the scene.

According to Weather Underground, the temperatures ranged from 14-32 degrees in Lastrup Sunday. Trace amounts of snow were observed in the area Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Icy conditions lead to more crashes

Additional State Patrol records show two other Sunday accidents attributed to ice on state highways (though neither were fatal).

Many parts of the state got their first rounds of snow last week, including enough to bring out plows in the southern region Friday, and a band in central Minnesota Thursday that led to dozens of accidents:
