Man dies while scuba diving in lake north of Stillwater

The 51 year old was said to be a certified diver.

A man died while scuba diving in Square Lake on Tuesday evening. 

The Washington County Sheriff's Office reports that they responded to a call at 7:39 p.m. of a scuba diver having difficulty in the water. The 51-year-old man was later found under water by a dive team, and attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene. 

Further information from the sheriff's office was not provided, but the MidWest School of Diving, located in White Bear Lake, says the man was a certified, experienced scuba diver. 

The diving school said on Facebook: "safety is as always everyone's number one concern while diving, as diving can a hazardous sport, once we know the details we will let folks knows!"

The man's identity is being withheld pending review by the medical examiner's office. 

Square Lake is located in May Township, about nine miles north of Stillwater. 

MidWest School of Diving trains beginners and advanced divers, in addition to helping divers earn Dive Master and Assistant Instructor certificates.
