Man dies in boating accident near Detroit Lakes

The 61-year-old was found unresponsive, and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A man from Sauk Rapids died after being pulled unresponsive from a lake near Detroit Lakes on Sunday.

Witnesses reported seeing the man in the water, trying to grab onto a boat that was moving in circles on Island Lake around 11 a.m. Sunday.

The man, identified as 61-year-old Lyle Nelson of Sauk Rapids, was eventually pulled from the water by rescuers, who performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

He was then airlifted to a hospital in Fargo, where he died, the Becker County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Monday.

Several organizations responded to the scene and assisted with the rescue, including LifeLink Aircare, the Minnesota DNR, Carsonville Fire and Rescue, Becker County Boat, St. Mary's EMS and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The circumstances of Nelson's death are still under investigation.
